Akwa Ibom State is on the verge of creating history with the launching of the state football league.
The news was broken by the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Monday Ebong Uko, on Wednesday when he hosted sports writers in the state to a parley at the conference room of the iconic Godswill Akpabio International Stadium,Uyo on Wednesday.
“I am trying to bring out the idea of us having a league called the Akwa Ibom State Football League. We have been struggling to get it to start;but now that I am coming for a new term,I think I cannot let this moment pass us by.
“The idea is that we have 31 local government areas in the state. We can take 19 teams to make the premier or the division one and 12 local governments for division two…. There will always be relegation like the normal league is operating.”
Uko further explained that the league will serve as the hatchery where soccer talents will be incubated.
“We will have a lot of talents discovered. There will be no need for us to go and and look for where to get players.
“We have four teams. Akwa United will take from there, pay to the local governments; and then if Akwa United is fortunate and the player is good,we can sell to the world and we can make money…A whole lot of us will be involved. There will be a lot of employment.”
The commissioner then called on sports writers in the state to help drive the dream which is set to start as soon as football activities in the country make full return.
“I can’t do this alone…I want all of you to join me so that we can make this dream a reality.”
The Akwa Ibom State Football League when launched, will be the first of its kind going by the format in which it is set to operate.
